Over the last three years, Sony has continually tempted us with key upgrades they’ve been rolling out with their mirrorless A7r series cameras. However, we’ve clung to our Canon gear, firmly believing that Canon can’t possibly go much longer without finally cannibalizing its lineup and offering a truly professional-grade mirrorless camera with dual card slots.

We’ve waited patiently based on new announcements rumored to be coming out February 2020. Well, here we are, and we just got a solid teaser.

As of February 13th, Canon Global has officially announced the new EOS R5:

The EOS R System enables greater freedom in lens design thanks to a wider lens mount diameter, short back focus and high-speed system for transmitting data between the camera and lens, resulting in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-use.

New Canon EOS R5 Features and Improvements

Though a whole lot hasn’t been disclosed, a few key features of interest are:

  • “Dual Media Slots” aka DUAL CARDS SLOTS!

  • “8K video capture capability [which] will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video”

  • “20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter”

  • “a high-performance coordinated image stabilization (IS) system that integrates the camera's in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses”

  • “improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability”

Anything Else in Canon Releasing in 2020?

The 2.13.2020 Canon also announced the production and release of nine new RF lenses including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM.
